词组 | business |
释义 | business As an example of the silly stuff usage writers sometimes get into, we give you this stricture: • Business is used colloquially for "right" or "obligation," but it has no grammatical sanction: "You have no business spending as much as you do" is better expressed as: "You have no right to spend as much as you do." —Powell 1925 The same sentiments are found in Vizetelly, Slips of Speech, 1922, and Jensen 1935; Krapp 1927 goes only as far as calling the construction colloquial. This use of business, defined as "Right of action," can be found in Samuel Johnson's Dictionary of 1755, with a late 17th century citation: • What business has a tortoise among the clouds? — L'Estrange The expression "no business" was current in the early 19th century: • ... my politics being as perverse as my rhymes, I had, in fact, "no business there" —Lord Byron, letter, 6 July 1812 That usage writers from the first third of the 20th century should find something amiss about this use can be explained only by their ignorance of its history. |
