释义 | secure Secure in the sense "to obtain by effort; gain secure control or possession of is recognized as legitimate by usage commentators (it has been around since the 18th century), but it makes some of them uneasy. Their concern is that it should not be used when a simple get or obtain would be more appropriate. Bernstein 1965 offers the following as an example of misuse: "He went to the store to secure a package of cigarettes." It is easy to see how a sentence like that might raise a few eyebrows, but we have no real evidence that secure is actually used when get or buy is so obviously called for. In edited prose, at least, secure seems almost always to be used in ways that even usage commentators would find unobjectionable, with implications of effort or of lasting possession: • He secured for the university library many outstanding private book collections —Current Biography, April 1966 • ... the pressure to secure a job immediately after high school —Donald McDonald, Center Mag., July/August 1970 • ... who failed to secure the party's nomination for reelection —William Edgett Smith, New Yorker, 30 Oct. 1971 • He secured the use of an army parade grounds —E. L. Doctorow, Ragtime, 1975 |
