词组 wrong, wrongly
释义 wrong, wrongly
Wrong is a versatile word. It can be used as an adjective, noun, or verb, and as an adverb synonymous with wrongly. Some commentators have observed that wrong is preferred to wrongly when the adverb occurs after the verb it modifies, while wrongly is used when the adverb precedes the verb. This observation accords with usage in most respects, but it leaves out several important complications.
The adverb wrong occurs most frequently with the verbs do, get, have, and especially go. With each of these verbs it forms set phrases in which wrongly cannot be idiomatically substituted:
.. falls under suspicion as the man who did her wrong—Time, 17 Apr. 1950
Don't get me wrong. I like Mr. Eberhart —Richard Bennett Hovey, New Republic, 16 Nov. 1953
When the people go wrong it is not from selfishness or materialism —A. J. P. Taylor, Saturday Rev., 11 Dec. 1954
Wrong is also used with other verbs. It usually follows immediately after the verb, often at the end of a sentence or clause:
The worst that can happen is that his instinct fails and he pushes wrong —Jeremy Larner, Harper's, April 1971
After all, one could guess wrong —Stan Sauerhaft, Dun's, March 1972
The costs had been figured wrong —Martin Mayer, Change, March 1972
... and if you choose wrong, you may lose your honor —Jeremy Larner, Harper's, April 1971
Wrongly occurs in such contexts, but it is less common than wrong.
When the adverb precedes the verb or participle that is being modified, wrongly is indeed the only possible choice:
... they are often wrongly accused of being politically biased —Robert B. Binswanger & Alan Wins-low, Change, July-August 1969
... this phrase is wrongly attributed to his broadcast on June 18—Times Literary Supp., 14 May 1970
... restored him to a position which has wrongly been denied him —Maurice Edelman, Books of the Month, April 1953
Note, however, that even if these sentences are rewritten so that the verbs come before the adverbs, it is still necessary to use wrongly. You could not say "often accused wrong of being," "is attributed wrong to his broadcast," or "a position which has been denied him wrong." Wrongly is often the adverb of choice regardless of whether it precedes or follows the verb:
... tends to harm many people by stigmatizing them wrongly as addicts —David W. Maurer & Victor H. Vogel, Narcotics and Narcotic Addiction, 1954
... he has sometimes applied this subtle rhythmic resource of the French style quite wrongly —Bernard Jacobson, Stereo Rev., October 1971
The best way to choose between wrong and wrongly is to rely on your own grasp of English idiom. The one that sounds correct is correct. If they both sound correct, then either one may be used.
These general observations also hold true for the analogous adverbs right and rightly.
