词组 | doubtlessly |
释义 | doubtlessly Because doubtless functions as an adverb, doubtlessly has remained an uncommon word during its half-millennium sojourn in the English language. Some people find it superfluous and would like to get rid of it altogether, but after such a long time it seems unlikely to disappear. Doubtlessly owes its existence to the fact that -ly is used so regularly to form adverbs from adjectives in English that adverbs without the -ly tend to sound a little incomplete. Even William Safire, in an article defending the use of sentence modifiers, is lured into using doubtlessly: • Doubtlessly, my deliberate decision to adopt "hopefully" in its sentence-coloring sense ... will be attacked —Safire 1980 When doubtlessly modifies an adjective, the inclusion of the -ly can help the sentence to read smoothly and be readily understood: • ... reduces everybody and everything to stereotypes, overlaid with doubtlessly unintentional vestiges of white colonialist mentalities —John J. O'Connor, N.Y. Times, 7 June 1979 See also doubtless, no doubt, undoubtedly. |
