词组 yourself, yourselves
释义 yourself, yourselves
The use of the reflexive pronouns yourself, singular, and yourselves, plural, in constructions where they are not reflexive or intensive has been criticized since at least the time of MacCracken & Sandison 1917, chiefly by the same commentators who have attacked myself. The criticism has been somewhat perfunctory for the most part. Nothing particularly baneful has been seen in either yourself or yourselves, and in general the unpleasant name-calling of the myself issue has not been repeated (see myself).
The most insightful commentary about these pronouns can be found in Jespersen 1909-49 (vol. 2) and Evans 1957. Both point out that yourself and yourselves preserve the distinction between singular and plural that has been lost from you, and they further suggest that yourself and yourselves are sometimes used in place of you for the purpose of making number explicit.
The OED shows yourself in uses neither reflexive nor emphatic from the 15th century on; the same uses for yourselves, a less common word, start in the 16th century. Here are some examples of ours:
I remark a considerable payment made to yourself on this Third of December —Robert Browning, Pippa Passes, 1841
I have read you; that is a favour few authors can boast of having received from me besides yourself— Samuel Johnson, The Idler, 10 June 1758
... I shall be as much benefited by it as yourselves —Jane Austen, Sense and Sensibility, 1811
Has it not been industriously circulated by yourselves? —Jane Austen, Pride and Prejudice, 1813
This vizard is a spark, and has a genius that makes her worthy of yourself, Dorimant —George Ether-ege, The Man of Mode, 1676
In our days there is scarcely an instance of a learned or unlearned man who has written gracefully, excepting your friend Goldsmith and (if your modesty will admit my approaches) yourself —Walter Savage Landor, Imaginary Conversations, 1848
Don't let him know she liked them best,
For this must ever be A secret, kept from all the rest, Between yourself and me.—Lewis Carroll, "She's All My Fancy Painted Him," ca. 1854
Get me some good left-handers like yourself and Robinson —Robert Frost, letter, 23 Jan. 1921
In all this I look to nothing but the happiness of yourself, Mr. Randolph, and the dear children — Thomas Jefferson, letter, 27 Feb. 1809
Those who, like yourself, know what they are about —Walter W. Skeat, letter, in K. M. Elisabeth Murray, Caught in the Web of Words, 1977
... you once told me about sighting a sea serpent— either yourself or a friend of yours saw it —James Thurber, letter, 4 Aug. 1955
The respectability of these uses is obviously above reproach. Evans finds them acceptable but is doubtful of their literary standing. We think these examples show a modest connection with literary usage.
