词组 liaise
释义 liaise
This back-formation from liaison is not as new a word as might be supposed; the OED Supplement includes a citation for it from 1928. It was originally a military word, but by the 1940s it appears to have become fairly well established in more general use among the British:
'To liaise'... was at first frowned on by the pundits: its usefulness ... soon came to outweigh its objec-tionableness —New Statesman, 1 Aug. 1942 (OED Supplement)
The meaning of liaise can be either "to act as a liaison officer" or "to establish liaison." Its occurrence in British English is now common and unremarkable:
... a school-based social worker to liaise with the social services department —Times Educational Supp., 23 Nov. 1973
... while liaising between management and men — Jeremy Kingston, Punch, 20 Mar. 1974
Part of his job was to liaise between the unions and political leaders —Daily Mirror (London), 13 Nov. 1974
... employed ombudsmen to liaise between journalists and their offended public —The Economist, 26 Apr. 1985
But in American English liaise is a very uncommon verb, and its occasional use still draws ridicule:
Mr. Reagan has not yet committed the sin of verbifying his "layizon." Some bureaucrats talk of arranging for their agencies to "liaise with" others.... In Reaganese, that would be pronounced "laze with" — Safire 1984
