释义 | calculated On etymological grounds Richard Grant White 1870 belabored the use of calculated in the sense of "apt, likely" as an error. He brought forth a quotation from Oliver Goldsmith as an example of the error. His objection, however, was entirely factitious; the participial adjective had been used in that sense for a century and a half before he decided it must be wrong. Still, White had a number of followers, and his objections were repeated at least as late as Jensen 1935. The sense is standard. A few examples: • ... with all the modest feeling which the idea of representing Edmund was so strongly calculated to inspire —Jane Austen, Mansfield Park, 1814 • DESPARD. Hush. This is not well. This is calculated to provoke remark —W. S. Gilbert, Ruddigore, 1887 • ... the way in which this Debate came about was calculated to give one the feeling of a challenge —Sir Winston Churchill, The Unrelenting Struggle, 1942 • ... some news of late that sounds to me better calculated to provoke distaste for us than respect — Adlai E. Stevenson, New Republic, 23 Feb. 1953 • What they found was not calculated to encourage an optimistic report —Time, 1 June 1954 Note that calculated can also be used in a sense "intended" which must be related to the dialectal sense of calculate meaning "intend." The participial adjective in this sense is not dialectal: • ... forms of evasion calculated precisely to prevent me from getting information —Walker Gibson, in The Hues of Modern English, 1969 |
