词组 martyr
释义 martyr
 1. Noun. When martyr is used with a preposition, it is usually followed by to:
He'd been a martyr to asthma all his life —A. J. Cronin, The Citadel, 1937
... Chaucer, as an amorous poet, made Aeneas fickle instead of a martyr to duty —Gilbert Highet, The Classical Tradition, 1949
Occasionally martyr is followed by for or of:
... she died as martyr for the new morality against the old —John Ardagh, Washington Post Book World, 26 Sept. 1971
... the common picture of her (Cleopatra) as a martyr of love, a mortal Aphrodite —John Buchan, Augustus, 1937
Raub 1897 suggests using "martyr for or to a cause, to a disease." According to our evidence, the distinction still exists. Of those citations in the Merriam-Webster files that show martyr used in connection with a physical condition, all follow it with to, as in the Cronin example above.
 2. Verb. When the verb martyr is used with a preposition whose object is the reason, it is usually for:
... he is determined to martyr himself, if need be, for the anti-Nazi cause —Time, 14 Apr. 1941
... martyred by Diocletian for refusing to abjure the Christian faith —E. R. Leach, London Calling, 24 June 1954
