词组 | muchly |
释义 | muchly Rather surprisingly, muchly has existed in our language for a long time. The first citation for it in the OED is dated 1621 and illustrates a straightforward use in a serious poetic context. The second OED citation, though, shows that in its early days muchly was also seen as something of an oddity: • Commonly 'tis larded with fine new words, as Sav-ingable, Muchly, Christ-Jesusness —J. Birkenhead, Assembly-Man, 1647 (OED) Unlike thusly (which see), muchly has never really gained a foothold in mainstream English. It is rarely found in print and is most commonly used these days in speech, especially in the phrase "thank you muchly." People tend to use it instead of much when they want to inject a little interest or humor into a conventional or formulaic speech pattern; even after three and a half centuries, muchly retains the character of a novelty word. |
