词组 maximize
释义 maximize
Janis 1984 says that maximize should not be modified by such adverbs as further and greatly, since its meaning is "to increase to a maximum." Phythian 1979 makes much the same point in a slightly different way by saying that it "should not be used as a synonym for simply increase." Presumably the criticized usage does have some currency, but its occurrence in published writing is, according to our evidence, extremely rare. Our files do not include a single example of maximize modified by an adverb of degree or otherwise used to mean simply "increase."
Maximize is sometimes disparaged as jargon, perhaps because it occurs so commonly in business writing. Here are some typical examples of its use:
... used to maximize social benefits and minimize adverse impacts —Michael Michaelis, Wall Street Transcript, 6 Mar. 1972
... can multiply and maximize profit —John Gregory Dunne, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 1 Apr. 1979
... to maximize the ticket sales of the new soccer team —Phil Berger, N. Y. Times Mag, 30 Sept. 1979
... athletes who are always trying to maximize performance —Runners World, April 1981
