词组 | cite, site, sight |
释义 | cite, site, sight A number of handbooks, primarily those aimed at college and high-school students, point out that these three homophones (or any pair of them) should not be confused. That the meanings are entirely distinct you can confirm by a glance at your dictionary; substituion of site or sight for one of the others (we have no examples of cite wrongly applied) is made on the basis of sound alone—and presumably little or no forethought. You would think this never happens except in the writing of careless students, but it does. • I have sighted only two examples —letter from an irate correspondent to Merriam-Webster, February 1980 • Set your sites on the future —advt., Morgan Horse, April 1983 • ... a policeman who claims to have sited UFOs — TV Guide, 2 Sept. 1981 All together now: the first should have been cited, the second sights, the third sighted. Pay attention when you write, seems to be the appropriate motto here. |
