词组 now
释义 now
Use of now as an adjective dates back to the 14th century. Its oldest sense, "present, existing," has impressive historical backing and has excited no animosity:
... into focus with the then or the now reality —Ezra Pound, Polite Essays, 1937
... the now Bishop Asbury had become well acquainted with the role —Dr. Asbury Smith, Maryland Mag., Autumn 1971
But in the 1960s the adjective now suddenly became popular—and somewhat notorious—in two new uses: describing the mores and manners of the younger generation, and characterizing the generation itself:
One agency music director in search of the "now sound" —Newsweek, 27 Nov. 1967
... fairly typical of the Now Generation —Henry S. Resnik, Saturday Rev., 26 Oct. 1968
... has one advantage over most of the "now" tunes —Murray Chass, N.Y. Times, 24 Aug. 1969
These uses of now enjoyed a vogue of several years, but by the mid-1970s they had aged somewhat, as had the generation they applied to. In current English they have a distinctly dated quality and are most likely to occur when the era of their popularity is being deliberately evoked. We have one citation, in fact, in which Now is being used to mean specifically "of or relating to the Now Generation of the late 1960s and early 1970s":
Unlike many of the Now movies that were hastily produced right after the sumptuous success of "Easy Rider" —Nora Sayre, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 1 Apr. 1984
