词组 obsolete
释义 obsolete
The use of this word as a verb is called into question by a few recent commentators—a usage panelist in Harper 1985, Janis 1984, Copperud 1980. Copperud blames the verb on the American military, as have a few of our correspondents. But the OED exculpates the Pentagon: the functional shift of obsolete from adjective to verb was first pulled off in 1640. In the 19th century the verb was used by Fitzedward Hall 1873, among others. Modern use appears to be an American revival dating, our files indicate, from the late 1930s:
For radio itself deliberately obsoletes today what it built yesterday —David Sarnoff, Television, 1936
These modern, lightweight Anchors have obsoleted all old style, "deadweight" equipment —advt., Yachting, April 1940
Things obsolete themselves more rapidly than at any time in our history —Scientific American, July 1944
In current use, it almost always appears in technical contexts:
One of these could easily develop some day into a reimaging process that would obsolete the ones we work with now —Philip E. Tobias, Book Production Industry, July 1967
... older cpu's whose speed and efficiency never were fully tapped before they were effectively obsoleted by their manufacturers —Edith Myers, Datamation, November 1977
The only losers are those who own the obsoleted capital —D. G. Soergel, Wall Street Jour., 31 Dec. 1980
