词组 bug
释义 bug
Various senses of bug, as a noun and as a verb, have been commented upon by usage writers. A selection:
 1. Electronic eavesdropping. Copperud 1970 reports both the noun and verb considered standard in some dictionaries; Ebbitt 1982 says they are established in general usage. The Harper 1975, 1985 panel seems to have some doubts about using them in "a formal report to Congress." The Ebbitt evaluation fits our evidence rather well. Bug appears a bit more common as a verb or gerund than as a noun.
... who ordered the bugging of the Democratic headquarters —Brian Beedham, The Listener, 18 July 1974
... making them live in one of the official ghettos for foreigners, bugging their apartments —Phillip Knightley, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 25 Jan. 1976
... paid spies and informers, phone tappings, bugs and seeing eyes —Harriet Bolton, Sunday Times (South Africa), 10 Nov. 1974
France's most juicy scandal at the moment is the affair of the bugging of Canard Enchaîné satirical magazine by the internal secret police —Punch, 8 July 1975
... setting each other up, taping and bugging reciprocally —Garry Wills, Saturday Rev., 11 Dec. 1976
 2. The use of the verb bug in the sense of "annoy, bother" troubles the Harper 1975, 1985 usage panel in print but not in casual speech. Our evidence shows it used in the same sort of general publications the electronic bug is found in:
Of course, academics and television have been bugging Mr. Nixon for most of his career —Telford Taylor, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 31 Oct. 1982
He still bugs Andrea about her tennis —Barry McDermott, Sports Illustrated, 9 Apr. 1984
 3. Finally we present three more bugs as lagniappe. Other usage books have not yet discovered these. They are all established in the same kind of general publications as the preceding uses. First the "unexpected flaw or defect":
... freedom from program bugs and errors —Datamation, December 1980
... "support" their systems by visiting users when bugs in the software show up —Christian Science Monitor, 22 Apr. 1982
      Then the "unspecified sickness":
... getting up after a tummy bug to keep the date because children were concerned —Doreen Taylor, Scottish Field, July 1975
... who has allergies and is always fighting some kind of bug —Newgate Callendar, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 21 Feb. 1983
      And last, "sudden enthusiasm":
... got the gliding bug two months ago —Evening Gazette (Middlesbrough, England), 27 May 1974
But he still had the baseball bug, and in 1956 the Phillies signed him —Jim Kaplan, Sports Illustrated, 22 Aug. 1983
But the building bug has spread to projects that could saddle Glaswegians with two large white elephants —Time, 5 Mar. 1984
