词组 | bright |
释义 | bright Safire 1986 says that bright, applied to an adult, "as used today" is a term of mild derogation or very faint praise. He finds it unfailingly complimentary when applied to children, but warns that it may not be so understood when applied to an adult. This nuance, he notes, is unrecorded in dictionaries. Safire reprints three letters he received in response to his original column: one, a New Yorker, disagrees; another New Yorker agrees but says the quasi-pejorative bright is usually applied to women by men; the third, from Illinois, has not heard of the quasi-pejorative use. Dictionaries don't recognize the use for want of cita-tional evidence. Safire's discussion and his one confirming correspondent suggest that the usage is probably an oral one and perhaps geographically or socially limited. If it spreads into general use, new dictionaries will let you know. |
