词组 occasion
释义 occasion
 1. Occasion is often followed by for or of; the two prepositions seem to be in about equal use:
... a formula that has been the occasion for a considerable amount of misunderstanding —I. A. Richards, Basic English and Its Uses, 1943
His death in 1945 was not an occasion for revising a harsh general opinion —Christopher Sykes, Encounter, December 1954
The birthday, apparently, was merely the occasion, not the cause, of the guests' effusions —Lillian Ross, New Yorker, 24 May 1952
... one of life's minor absurdities and small occasions of anguish —Robert Kiely, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 1 July 1979
Occasion also is followed quite frequently with to and the infinitive. In this construction occasion is typically preceded by the verb have or, once in a while, another verb such as find or take:
Einstein had the occasion one afternoon to call Mays —Al Silverman, Saturday Rev., 23 Apr. 1955
... I had occasion to see an unusual number of movies —Lewis H. Lapham, Harper's, November 1971
... the Honourable Peter ... found occasion to get some conversation with Adrian alone —George Meredith, The Ordeal of Richard Feverel, 1859
... Lowell took occasion to describe the direction of his interest in American English usage —Jayne Crane Harder, American Speech, October 1954
 2. Andy Rooney writes (And More by Andy Rooney, 1982) that he has to check his spelling of occasion to make sure he hasn't stuck two s's in the word. Copperud 1980 also reports the double s misspelling, and our files have plenty of examples of occasion and occasionally with the otiose s. So check your spelling; if Andy Rooney can, so can you.
