词组 | office |
释义 | office The turning of nouns into verbs is frequently condemned by commentators. One of these verbs created by functional shift is office, and it is condemned by Copperud 1980. Copperud also reports that Harper 1975 disapproves, though we have not been able to locate the passage. He further states that only Webster recognizes the use, and gives as an example a passive transitive use that is not recognized in either Webster's Second or Webster's Third, although both dictionaries recognize other senses of the verb. This particular functional shift began in the 15th century, according to the OED, which also recognizes the verb. Shakespeare was not diffident about making a verb of office. Most of the OED senses are now obsolete, but the OED Supplement provides examples of the intransitive sense which is recorded in Webster's Third. It means "to have an office," or, followed by with, "to share an office." The OED Supplement marks the use "U.S." (we also have Canadian evidence) and dates it from 1892. Here are three recent examples (the first is Canadian): • When I took my first teaching job at the University of Manitoba in 1949 I taught and officed in what was known as the old Broadway Buildings —James Reaney, preface, Masks of Childhood, 1972 • Mr. Mardian spoke of a man who "officed in that same agency." —Israel Shenker, N. Y. Times, 11 Aug. 1973 • ... in some cases they office right in their homes — Arlene Rossen Cardozo, Woman at Home, 1976 The office with construction was the subject of a controversy at Louisiana State Universtiy in 1975; it is exactly the same construction as the entirely uncontroversial room with, Aside from this squabble and one other reported use, we have no evidence for this construction in our files. The OED Supplement has one, though, from 1936. The passive transitive use criticized by Copperud does exist: • ... historians who were apparently officed on an upper floor —Lillian Langseth-Chistensen, Gourmet, November 1979 This use is too rare at present for dictionary recognition. |
