词组 | commentate |
释义 | commentate Commentate is a back-formation from commentator; it was first used as a transitive verb in the late 18th century and then as an intransitive verb in the early 19th. A number of American writers on usage in the latter half of the 20th century have taken umbrage at its use. We have the usage panel of Heritage 1969, Shaw 1970, Bremner 1980, Janis 1984, and Harper 1985, all registering their disapproval. (Heritage 1982 rejects only the transitive use.) The amount of attention devoted to a word so little used is a little puzzling. We know of no British denigration of the word, however. Commentate is often not used in quite the same way as comment, which is often recommended in its place; it tends to refer to the making of an extended, even systematic commentary or to the presentation of commentary on a regular basis rather than to scattered comments. Some examples: • Commentate upon it, and return it enriched — Charles Lamb (in Webster 1909) • ... remarked to a Mr. Broun that Lardner was the country's only sports writer who had ever had any business commentating on politics —Commonweal, 31 Mar. 1939 • Raymond Moley, after seven months of professorial commentating, decided to call it quits —Time, 1 Oct. 1945 • ... Weekend's Helen Gougeon commentated at yesterday's Fur Fashion Award Show —Harriet Hill, The Gazette (Montreal), 15 Apr. 1953 • ... Stanley Marcus ... will commentate the winning citations —Arnold Gingrich, Esquire, January 1974 • ... the fashion show commentated by Saks fashion director Patricia Fox —Kim Blair, Los Angeles Times, 20 Nov. 1979 • There is a very true blue and pukka British centaur called Dorian Williams who always commentates on horsefests —Philip Howard, Verbatim, Autumn 1980 |
