词组 | officious, official |
释义 | officious, official A handful of commentators (almost all British) and the Oxford American Dictionary warn against confusion of officious and official. Fowler 1926 started the tradition of having an entry for these words, but his point concerns their technical meanings in diplomacy rather than their potential for confusion in their ordinary meanings. We have no evidence of such confusion in our files. Officious was occasionally used as a synonym of official in previous centuries, but that sense of the word is now obsolete. Official has never been used to mean "officious." There may be no problem, in fact. Officious in current English is essentially synonymous with meddlesome. Here are a few typical examples of current use: • ... usually barges into things, officious and overconfident —Lloyd N. Jeffrey, CEA Critic, January 1971 • ... experienced educators and teachers—rather than officious bureaucrats —Harold Howe II, Saturday Rev., 20 Nov. 1971 • ... the silence was shattered by the bustle and officious chatter—Runner's World, October 1980 |
