Lenneberg, Biological Foundations of Language, 1967 • He would have preferred any other job but that of G-3 —Norman Mailer, The Naked and the Dead, 1948 • ... the U.S. had no other choice but to hold to its position —Time, 20 Sept. 1948 We have no evidence to suggest that except has ever been common in this construction, at least in writing, and we have no modern example except what Partridge offers from British journalism. This extract from the conversation of Jane Austen's Marianne Dashwood, however, continues to sound both idiomatic and modern: • "... I have not known him long indeed, but I am much better acquainted with him, than I am with any other creature in the world, except yourself and mama " —Sense and Sensibility, 1811 This version of the construction may well be more common in speech than in writing, and it may occur in writing chiefly where it is motivated, as here, by the appearance of than nearby in the context. |
