词组 | overall |
释义 | overall This word has become common only in the 20th century, and its newfound popularity has led to criticism from several commentators (such as Evans 1957, Gowers 1965, and Phythian 1979). Their basic objection is not to the word itself but to its overuse, especially as an adjective in place of such familiar words as general, total, complete, and comprehensive. It is, certainly, an extremely common word, and although all of its common uses are standard, you may well want to give some thought to its value or appropriateness in a particular context before you use it in your writing. It is not, however, a word to be shunned. Here are a few examples of its use, both as an adjective and as an adverb: • Despite an overall cultural similarity, the various parts of West Pakistan are dominated by different communal groups —Rosanne Klass, Saturday Rev., 5 Feb. 1972 • ... the overall effect of the book is numbing — Michael Kämmen, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 4 July 1976 • ... the overall temper, the general disposition of the writer —I. A. Richards, Times Literary Supp., 7 July 1978 • The sale, overall, appeared to have been successful —Antiques and the Arts Weekly, 29 Oct. 1982 • Overall, we need to promote public awareness — Russ Peterson, Audubon Mag., November 1982 |
