词组 daresay, dare say
释义 daresay, dare say
This compound verb is used in the first person singular of the present tense. It has hardly ever been used otherwise; the OED shows a single example of "he durst say" from Sterne in the 18th century, and Sylvia Townsend Warner ventured a "Philip ... daresayed" in a story in the New Yorker in 1954. You can write it as one word or two. Old handbooks—around the turn of the century—prescribed two words, and Chambers 1985 believes two words to be usual. But our evidence shows the one-word styling slightly more common.
Heritage 1982 says daresay is more common in British than American English. It may be, but it is not the least bit unusual in American English.
In its transitive use daresay is followed by a clause. Formerly the clause would never have been introduced by that, but in recent use that is used. Some examples without and with that:
Well, I daresay my boiling point is lower than Baby Doll's —Harry Kurnitz, Holiday, February 1957
I daresay it's silly to look for the winner beyond Can-onero II —Audax Minor, New Yorker, 5 June 1971
I dare say the case is no different for the trade literature of morticians —Robert Lekachman, Change, September 1972
I daresay that the chief reason that the invitation to supply this historical sketch came to me is ... — Louise Pound, PADS, April 1952
... and I dare say that my children ... have a livelier time of it —Alec Waugh, National Rev., 23 Feb. 1971
... and I daresay that if it had been stuck into one of Mr. Buckley's novels ... —Nora Ephron, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 7 Aug. 1983
