词组 mentality
释义 mentality
This was an uncommon word until the early 20th century, when it first came to be widely used in the sense "way of thinking; outlook." Its newly common use was noted with disapproval by Fowler 1926, who considered it a "superfluous word" and hoped that it would be allowed to "lapse into its former obscurity." That hope has not been realized. The "outlook" sense of mentality has continued to be common, and it has attracted relatively little critical attention since Fowler's time (a few commentators have considered it overused).
As Gowers notes in his revision of Fowler 1965, it often carries overtones of disparagement:
... top officers tended to have banana-boat mentalities in a jet age —Albert H. Johnston, Publishers Weekly, 2 Aug. 1976
... a study of greed, of the small-town mentality, of alienated youth —Newgate Callendar, N.Y. Times Book Rev., 21 Aug. 1983
The herd mentality that led the world banking community to follow Mr. Wriston's lead —Ann Crittenden, N. Y. Times Book Rev., 8 July 1984
