词组 minutia
释义 minutia
The meaning of minutia is "a minute or minor detail." The word is almost always now used in its plural form:
... seldom are minutiae piled on —Bradley Miller, American Scholar, Winter 1981/82
... only after ... all minutiae of a complex protocol have been observed —Fred Bruemmer, Natural History, December 1984
Evans 1957 finds that the plural can be either minutias or minutiae; however, our evidence shows that the only form now used is minutiae. Bernstein 1965 cites as an error a sentence in which minutiae is used as a singular. This does not appear to be a widespread problem; we have no further evidence of the error in our files. Janis 1984, on the other hand, warns against using minutia as a plural (as though a singular minutium existed), and for this we do have some evidence:
She has described her early years in their minutia — Herbert Lottman, Columbia Forum, Fall 1970
... acquiring encyclopedic knowledge about minutia —Frederick Goldman & Linda R. Burnett, Need Johnny Read?, 1971
This use of minutia is not established as standard. For other foreign plurals, see Latin plurals.
