词组 | debut |
释义 | debut The verb debut is disapproved of by many usage writers (as Bernstein 1977, Bremner 1980, and the usage panels of both editions of Harper and Heritage). Intransitive uses have been around since 1830 but transitive uses, which are even more strongly disliked and are less common, only since the 1950s. This verb comes in handy in newspaper and magazine articles, where it is most often found, since newsy writing often discusses first appearances of people, products, and the like. In general prose of this sort it is standard but it seems to have almost no use in literature and other more elevated varieties of writing. It is worth noting, too, that the transitive uses have a more jargonish flavor than the intransitive. • A series called Trio debuted —Joseph Finnigan, TV Guide, 19 Feb. 1966 • The new monthly with a 50-cent cover price will debut this week —Philip H. Dougherty, TV. Y. Times, 18 Nov. 1975 • The Panama Canal Treaty will debut on the Senate Floor Wednesday —Senator Robert Byrd, U.S. Senate debate, 8 Feb. 1978 • Willie Nelson returns occasionally, after debuting on one of the first shows —Jorjanna Price, Houston Post, 30 Aug. 1984 • Key Biscayne is debuting an all-condo shopping center —Metropolitan Home, January 1982 • CompuServe jointly debuted electronic shopping service with LM Berry —Predicasts Technology Update, 18 Feb. 1985 |
