词组 jealous
释义 jealous
 1. Some language commentators warn against confusing the words jealous and zealous. At one time, as the OED indicates, the two words were considered synonyms and were used as such, most particularly in the Bible and in related religious writings:
      And he said, I have been very jealous for the Lord God of hosts—1 Kings 19:10 (AV), 1611
      To spoyle the zelous God of his honour —Homilies II, 1563 (OED)
      According to our evidence, jealous and zealous are not otherwise used interchangeably. Their closest approach in meaning now occurs when jealous is used to mean "vigilant in guarding a possession":
      All the authors I have met are diligent in their work, sober, earnest, jealous of their craft, eager to perfect their art —Allan McMahan, in The Wonderful World of Books, ed. Alfred Stefferud, 1952
      ... toward a more passionate assertion of the demands of individual freedom, or a more jealous insistence upon the precedence of the community — Archibald MacLeish, American Scholar, Autumn 1953
 2. When Jealous is used with a preposition, it is usually used with of:
      Up the stairs ... came the model, at whom Beppo looked askance, jealous of an encroacher on his rightful domain —Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Marble Faun, 1860
      I know that religion, science, and art are all jealous of each other —W. R. Inge, The Church in the World, 1928
      ... the 1944 campaign cost the French many lives and untold property, of which the Normands are so traditionally jealous —David Butwin, Saturday Rev., 21 June 1969
      Once in a while, jealous is used with for:
      They were like sons to him, he was jealous for their welfare, and was always available for advice and help —Dictionary of American Biography, 1929
      Infrequently, jealous has been used with to and an infinitive or with over;

      Ape-women, mannish Russian scientists, stewardesses wearing impossible caps,... they are all there, and who would get jealous over them? —Robert Plank, Hartford Studies in Literature, vol. 1, no. 1, 1969
