词组 | Democrat, Democratic |
释义 | Democrat, Democratic Harper 1975, 1985, Copperud 1970, 1980, and Heritage 1982 all comment on the use of Democrat as an adjective by some Republican politicians. Heritage notes the usage does not have much acceptance off the campaign stump, and Copperud notes that it is not recognized in dictionaries. It is, however, unlikely to require notice in dictionaries because it is simply an attributive use of the noun. The longest and most interesting treatments of the subject are in Copperud 1980 and Safire's Political Dictionary (1978). Safire traces the use back to Leonard Hall in 1955 and, apparently, earlier to Thomas E. Dewey. The usage is primarily a spoken one. In print, Democratic with a capital D serves to distinguish the political designation from the broader lowercase use. |
