词组 | as the crow flies |
释义 | as the crow flies Copperud 1970, 1980 reports two critics calling this expression a cliché and an archaism. This criticism is self-contradictory: if it is a cliché it is current, and if it is an archaism it is not current. Neither view seems justified with respect to writing; however, our evidence suggests this is a more common expression in speech than in writing. Bernstein 1965 finds the phrase battered and asks why not say "in a straight line" or "by air." But the replacement will not always work well, as you will see if you try either of those substitutes in this fairly recent example: • The main access route, Forest Service Road 99, takes you to Windy Ridge, within 4 miles as the crow flies of the crater's edge, for a view into the smoking maw of the volcano —Sunset, June 1983 |
