 “certainly not”是“不一定”的意思吗?
 【答】 not+副词可以构成部分否定，如not always，not often，not entirely等等。但本例中的certainly与not并不构成部分否定。也就是说，状语certainly并不位于否定范围之内，更不是否定的重心。根据R.Quirk等人的理论，主语和谓语前面的状语，通常不包括在否定范围之内，因此，下面的两个句子在意义上是有很大差别的。
 a) I definitely didn’t speak to him. (It’s definite that I did not.)
 我肯定没有跟他说过话。
 b) I didn’t definitely speak to him. (It’s not definite that I did.)
 我不能肯定曾跟他说过话。
 由此可见，某些副词的位置对于确定否定范围和否定重心具有决定性的作用：它们位于否定词not之前时，一般不在否定范围之内，而起加强否定的作用，位于否定词not之后时则往往位于否定范围之内，并且很可能成为否定的重心。在下列句子里，副词certainly，defi-nitely等均位于否定词not之前，故都位于否定范围之外，是否定的加强语。
