表示静止的“在其前面”，动态的“在其前面”要说 ahead of。所以 She was walking a few steps in front of me. 应该改为 She was walking a few steps ahead of me. 她先我几步走着。但是 behind 可以用于动静两态。

I was walking a few steps behind her.我离她几步走在后面。

另外，表示空间位置，用 before 不如用 in front of 自然。

In front of (*Before) our house stands a large maple tree.我家门前有一棵很大的枫叶树。
