■ match

1) 作为名词，首先比较简单的一个词义，就是“棋逢敌手，将遇良材”中旗鼓相当的“敌手”。

• He's a match for anybody.他不亚于任何人。
• He was more than a match for Jones.他赛过琼斯。
• I had finally met /found my match in power and intellect.我终于遇上了论势论智都不相上下的敌手。
• I was no match for a man with such power.我敌不过这样有势力的人。
• He was no match for his rival in exploiting crises.论利用危机，他无法比得过他的对手。
• We shall never see his match.比得上他的，我们不会再看到第二个。

match 在这里也可以转义，不指人而指难题。

• I thought I knew quite a lot about electrical things, but when I was given this old radio to repair, I had to admit that I'd met my match.我起初以为自己对电懂得不少，但是人家一交给我这台旧式收音机叫我修理，我就不得不承认遇到了难题。

2) 这个“配对”的意义，更常常用到男女配偶方面。match 在这里有时指配偶的一方，有时指双方合成的一对，有时指双方的结合。

• a pure love match情投意合的婚事。
• The two of them make/are a good match.他们俩是很好的一对。
• Who thought up this match?这门亲事是谁出的主意？
• She made a good match.她结了一门好亲事。
• You must not think that I approve of this match.你别以为我会赞成这门亲事。
• He's a good match.他是个如意郎君。
• They are right matches.他们是很合适的一对（注意 matches，这里用的是复数）。
• We'll find a good match for you.我们会替你找个好对象的。

3) “配对”也可以指事物之间的“相配”、“和谐”。Match 在这里可以指“另一配对物”，也可以指“双方配对物的总和”。

• The skirt is a good match for the blouse.裙子同衬衣很相配。
• Can you find the match to this glove?你能找到这只手套的另一只吗？
• I've found a vase that's an exact match of the one we already have.我找到了一个花瓶，同我们已经有的那个恰恰成对。
• Helen's choice of lipstick was a good match for her skin-tone.海伦选择的口红颜色，同她的肤色很相配。
• The chairs and the desk are a good match.椅子和书桌很相配。
• These colours are a good match.这些颜色彼此很相配。

近年来由于器官移植手术逐渐普及，match 也获得了一个新的医学词义，就是与等待移植的病人的条件相符合的供体。

• A match was found for the patient, and the date for transplant operation was set.找到了同病人配对的供体，于是定了移植手术的日期。

法医学上近年来也常常使用 DNA 来查明是不是同一人，match 就可以表示与某一标本相符的另一标本，或者两者之间“相符”的关系（名词、及物或不及物动词，属第一类动词）。

• 99.6 percent of the population of North American could be excluded as a match.北美居民有百分之九十九点六可以排除不算作符合对象。
• This increased the likelihood of a match between the DNA on the toll ticket and the defendant's DNA.这就加大了过路收费单上的 DNA 同被告的 DNA 相符的概率。
• The probability the defendant's DNA matched the DNA on a Thruway toll ticket was 99 percent.被告的 DNA 同过路收费单上的 DNA 相符的概率为百分之九十九。

match 也可以转义为“同质之物”。

• Do you have a match for this ribbon?你们有没有同这个一样的丝带？
• The new paint is not quite a perfect match.新的油漆同原来的不完全一样。

4) match 作为表示延续状态的第一类动词，可以及物，也可以不及物。作为及物动词，它的直接宾语可以是主语匹敌或配对的对象，也可以是主语拿来同另一对象（用介词 with 或 to 引入）匹配的对象。

• The gloves match the scarf.手套和头巾很相配。
• His arrogance is matched only by that of his father.他的傲慢，只有他父亲才能与之相比。
• This restaurant can't be matched for quality.这家餐馆的质量是无双的。
• It doesn't match our client's specifications.这不符合我们客户的规格。
• The windmill blades will be adjustable to match wind speeds.风车叶片是可以调整的，以适应风速。

也可以作为表示“进行配对”的瞬时动作动词，属第四类动词。

• Can you match the names with the photographs?你能把每个人的名字同他的照片逐个对起来吗？
• I have trouble matching names to faces.我把人名同人脸对起来很吃力。

如果不用 with 或 to 而用 against，则有“拿…来同…比高低”的意思。

• He matched his skills against the champion's.他同冠军比本领。

另外，作为及物动词的 match 还有一个转义，就是作为瞬时动词（第四类），表示“为了使得本事物能与另一类似事物并驾齐驱，而对差距加以弥合”。

• We won't be beaten on price. Find the same item elsewhere at a lower retail price and we'll match the difference!我们在价格上决不会输给别人。您如果在别处发现有同样的货物而零售价更低廉，我们一定弥合这个差距！
• I feel sure that my company would be able to match his (=my competitor's) offer. (Jeffrey Archer, The Fourth Estate, p.485)我肯定我的公司出价不会比他低。
• We match all competitors' prescription prices and offers. (Rite-Aide announcement)凡是所有与本店竞争者的配方药品价格以及优惠，本店均一律同样照办。

5) match 作为表示延续状态的第一类动词，如果主语是双方，意思是“互相匹配”；如果主语是单方，通常要补上 with 介词短语，表示“与…相匹配”（有时对象清楚，也可以略去 with 短语）。

• I can't find two socks that match.我找不到两只成双的袜子。
• None of the glasses matched.所有玻璃杯都配不成双。
• These gloves match very nicely with your coat.这些手套同您的外衣很配。

6) match 作为表示状态的延续状态（第一类）及物动词，派生出来的过去分词 matched 已经差不多成了形容词，意思是“相匹配的”或是“势均力敌的”，常用于表语。

• He and his wife are well matched.他和他妻子彼此很相配。
• The two teams are well matched.两队实力势均力敌。
