2) 主语是人，mean 表示“某人通过说出某话要表达某意思”，这个“某话”用 by 引入，mean 的强度同 1) 相同。 - What do you mean by "hermetic"?你说的“hermetic”是什么意思？
3) 有所加强，主语是人，宾语是名词成分或 that 名词从句，mean 表示“（真正要说但表面没有明说的）意思”。 - What do you mean?你说这话是什么意思？
- Do you mean that I was lying?你的意思是说我撒谎吗？
- That's not what I meant.我刚才说的不是这个意思。
by 后面如果引入 -ing 动名词，就不是 2) 那样的一般限于词义内容如何，而是指行动的后果。 - What do you mean by waking me up at this time of night?你半夜三更这个时候把我弄醒，是什么意思？
4) 再加强一点，后面接上名词或代词作宾语，或接上 to inf.，表示宾语所说是郑重其事的。 - Don't worry, he didn't mean it.别担心，他那样说不见得当真。
- I mean what I say.我是说到做到的。
- He seemed to mean the compliments he paid her.他对她的恭维，似乎是真话。
- Do you really mean to leave so early?你真的要这么早就走吗？

5) 更进一步加强，表示“有意或故意作某事”。 - I mean to succeed.我一定要成功。
- He means well.他是出于好意。
- He didn't mean you any harm.他一点也没有伤害你的意思。
- He means no offense by it.他这样说并无恶意。
- It hit you, but I didn't mean it.伤是伤了你，但我是无意的。
- I didn't mean to make you cry.我本来不是要惹你哭的。
- Sorry. I didn't mean to interrupt you.对不起。我并不是要打断您的话。
用 mean 的过去时态，可以表示“本来打算如何（但是没有实现）”。 - I meant to do it, but I forgot.我原来是要这样做的，但是忘记了。
- He meant to spend a few minutes on the stationary bike this morning, but one thing led to another and there just wasn't time.他本来打算今天上午在固定脚踏车上踩几分钟，但是事情一件接着一件，结果没有时间。
- I've been meaning to phone you for weeks.好几个礼拜我一直都打算给你打电话。
有时候 mean 后面的 to inf. 的逻辑主语同 mean 的主语不同，此时可以将后面这个不同的主语以 mean 的宾语形式出现，后面再接上 to inf.。 - We didn't mean it to end this way.我们本来并没有打算让事情弄成这样的结果。
有时候 mean 与这个宾语之间还可以加上介词 for。 - I really doubt he ever meant for it to go this far.我的确不大相信他原来就有意把事情闹得这样大。
- If God meant for me to touch my toes, he would have put diamonds on the floor.假如上帝有意要我摸我自己的脚趾头，他就会在地板上放上钻石。
6) to be meant for 这个词组属于表示延续状态（或表示判断）而非瞬时变化的第一类动词，意思是“是为…而设的”、“以…为目标的”。 - He believed the bullet was meant for his brother.他相信那颗子弹本来是要打他哥哥的。
7) what do you mean 用起来要慎重，尤其是如果后面不接上其他具体化的说明成分，单说 What do you mean? 有气汹汹的“兴师问罪”的意思。 - What do you mean, I can't sing?你这是什么意思？是说我不能唱吗？
