■ deny

1) deny 后面跟着表示瞬时行动的 -ing 动名词或 having + pp 都可以表示否认在此之前做过某事。

• He denied stealing [having stolen] the money.他否认偷了钱（过去的行为）。
• The prisoner denied conspiring (having conspired) against the government.囚徒否认阴谋反对政府（过去的行为）。
• He denied ever meeting(having ever met) her.他否认曾经同她见过面。

许多含义为“承认”、“否认”、“记忆”、“忘记”、“怀念”等的动词，后面接上表示瞬时动作动词的动名词时，这个动名词往往用现在形式 -ing 表现过去 (= having + pp) 的意义，参见 remember, admit, forget 条。

2) 如果后面跟着延续状态动词（第一类动词）或延续动作动词（第二类动词）的 -ing 动名词，则是否认当时（而不是过去）自己处于某种状态或正在进行某动作。

• Both denied belonging to the guerrilla group but were sentenced to thirteen and six years in prison respectively.两人都否认属于游击集团，但仍然分别被判处十三年和六年监禁。
• Peter had denied knowing Jesus three times before dawn.彼得在黎明前三次否认自己认识耶稣。
• He denied being a politician.他否认自己是个政客。
• He denied working for that company.他否认自己是为那家公司工作的。

但是，即使是第二类动词，也可能不是否认当时正在如何，而是否认过去曾经如何。

• He denied working in the Nazi death camps.他否认曾经在纳粹死亡营工作过。

3) 可以用 deny + 宾语 + to be 结构（后面只能用 to be，不能用别的动词），表示“否认某人（物）是什么”。

• They denied the rumor to be true.他们否认了谣传是真的。

4) deny 可以有直接和间接宾语。可以 deny + 间接宾语 + 直接宾语，也可以 deny + 直接宾语 + to + 间接宾语。意思是“拒绝给予某人以某物”。

• He denies his son nothing (He denies nothing to his son).他对儿子是有求必应。
• The government exploited their labour while denying them social equality.政府剥削他们的劳动，同时又不给他们社会平等地位。
• He has also denied you access to some information.他还拒绝了让你接触某些信息。
• The governor has denied clemency to the gang leader.州长拒绝了宽恕那个团伙头目。

既然是“拒绝”，也就有了否定的意义（此时 deny 就转为表示状态的延续动词，即第一类动词）。

• The windows (of the car) were coated with dark plastic, which denied the casual onlooker（间接宾语）the sight（直接宾语）of the people inside.车子的窗蒙上了暗色的塑料膜，路人偶然张望也看不见车里的人。

5) 这种双宾语的结构，还可以变为被动语态。直接宾语固然可以变为主语。

• Hope was denied to her.她绝望了（her 因为是代词，前面的 to 也可省略）。
• Justice has been denied us.我们受到了不公正的对待。
• Estimates of the total amount of oil revenue denied the Iraqi government（间接宾语）range as high as $250 billion. (Foreign Affairs, July/Aug., 2004, p.97)伊拉克政府没有得到的石油收入，据估计高达两千五百亿美元。

就是间接宾语也可以变为主语，直接宾语地位和位置不变（这是英语的一大特点）。

• People there were denied even basic human rights.那里的人民当时甚至享受不到基本人权。

上面的例句 Justice has been denied us 也可以转换为 We have been denied justice. 而且在英语实际使用中，以间接宾语转换为主语，比以直接宾语转换为主语，用得更为频繁。

• Almost 80,000 sick and disabled people a year are being wrongly denied benefits.八万名病人和残疾人正在被错误地剥夺福利。
• Only people who have actually been convicted of a felony should have been denied the vote, not law- abiding citizens.本来唯有确实被判定犯了重罪的人，而不是守法公民，才应该被剥夺投票权。
