■ estimate 与 estimation

1) 两者都有“评价”、“估价”的意义，有时候可以互用。但是 estimate 多用于数量上对具体事物的“评估”，estimation 多用于性质上对人或对抽象事物的“评价”。

• His estimate of the storm-related damages ran into the billions.暴风雨造成的损失，他估计有数十亿元之巨。
• In the estimation of his countrymen, he was a great man.在他本国同胞的心目中，他是个伟人。

2) estimation of 后面是主动者还是被动者？凡是 in the estimation of 后面是人，则这个人是主动者（“按照某人作出的评价”）。

• In the estimation of Picasso's friends, it acts like a memorandum for him. (Janet Flanner, New Yorker, March 9, 1957)在毕加索的朋友们看来，那像是给他的一份备忘录。

但是如果 the 改为物主代词，则这个代词所代表的人是主动者，of 后面无论是人或是事物，都是被动者。

• …his own estimation of certain modern composers...(Warwick Braithwaite, The Conductor's Art)…他本人对当代某些作曲家的评价…

至于 of 后面不是人而是事物，那就更不可能是主动者。

• To divert interest from the poet to the poetry is a laudable aim: for it would conduce to a juster estimation of actual poetry, good and bad. (T. S. Eliot)把注意力从诗人那里转移到诗本身那里去，是一个值得称道的目标：因为这一来，就有可能对真正的诗歌，无论好的坏的，都作出更为公正的评价。
