这两个短语动词不一定同义： be ill 是作“患病”或“生病”讲，而 be sick 则是“稍有不适”或“呕吐”的意思（注：美国英语通常说 be sick ，不常说 be ill ；通常说 fall sick ，不常说 fall ill ）。
例如：
Mary has been ill for more than a week. 玛丽生病已有一个多星期了。
Mrs Ross suddenly felt sick and was sick twice before she could even get into bed. 罗斯太太突然感到要吐；临睡前，还呕吐了两次。
