1. whereas是从属连词，多引导对比状语从句，含意上相当于while，但语气更强，也更正式。
2. whereas偶尔也可引导让步状语从句，这时主句和从句常有对偶关系。

　Some praise him, whereas others condemn him.　有些人赞扬他，而有些人谴责他。
　Whereas the amendment is enthusiastically supported by a large majority in the Senate, its fate is doubtful in the House.　尽管此修正案在参议院得到了多数议员的热情支持，但在众议院其命运很难确定。
