 ♣ other than
　〔说明〕 other than常用于否定句中。
1. 除了except; apart from
　Does anybody other than yourself know this?　除你本人之外还有别人知道这事吗?
　She has no close friends other than him.　除了他以外她没有好朋友。
　You can't get there other than by boat.　除了坐船，你无法去那里。
2. 绝不是anything but
　I have never known him behave other than selfishly.　我知道他一向自私自利。
　He can hardly be other than annoyed about it.　他当然只会对此感到烦恼。

 ♣ the other day〔afternoon, evening, etc.〕
　前几天〔前几天下午，前几天晚上〕 on recent day〔afternoon, evening, etc.〕
　I saw him in Paris the other day.　我前几天在巴黎见过他。

 ♣ other, else
　参见else条。
 ♣ some other day, the other day
　这两个短语意思不同。some other day指“今后的某一天”；而the other day指“不久前的某一天”。
 ♣ the other, another
　参见another条。

　约翰比班上其他的男生都高。
　［误］ John is taller than any boy in the class.
　［正］ John is taller than any other boy in the class.
　［析］ than any boy in the class指的是“班里的任何一个男孩，也包括约翰在内”，如果在any之后没有other，听起来好像约翰不是这个班的，所以必须加上other才指除约翰以外班上其余的任何一个男孩。
