 ♣ 下面两个句子的意思不同：
　
　严格说， person的复数是people，不是persons，因为后者是用来指一个一个可数的人。

1. 房间里根本没有人。
　［误］ There was no person in the room at all.
　［正］ There was nobody in the room at all.
　［析］ person通常指具体数字，且用于肯定句。当表示否定意义，且所指数字不具体时，不能用person，一般用nobody.
2. 在春天一个晴朗的日子里去野餐，总是令人惬意的。
　［误］ It is always enjoyable for a person to go out on a picnic on a fine day in spring.
　［正］ It is always enjoyable to go out on a picnic on a fine day in spring.
　［析］ “去野餐”，涉及的当然是人，再加上for a person，就显得多余。
3. 市长说他将亲自来调查这件事。
　［误］ The mayor said that he would come to look into the matter by person.
　［正］ The mayor said that he would come to look into the matter in person.
　［析］ in person表示“亲自”，其中介词in不能换用by.

　随着女权运动的开展，用person代替man的情况越来越多。英美也都有一些官方政策在表示不受性别限制的工种或不排斥女性的职业上用person来代替man. 例如：
　salesman→salesperson; congressman→congressperson; draughtsman→draughts-person; chairman→chairperson...。
