词组 relate
释义 relate
The sense of intransitive relate that means "to have or establish a relationship, interact" seems to have had its origins in the jargon or shoptalk of psychology and sociology. It established itself in general use during the 1960s as something of a vogue word. It has received unflattering notice in Strunk & White 1972, 1979, Perrin & Ebbitt 1972, Ebbitt & Ebbitt 1982, Bremner 1985, and Harper 1975, 1985. A few of these find it a tad more tolerable when relate is followed by a to phrase. It occurs both without and with such a phrase:
... she herself had been the kind of child to grow up incapable of relating: insecure, cold, undeveloped, guilt-ridden —Margaret Drabble, The Needle's Eye, 1972
"They (teen-age salespeople) know what you want and they can relate," says Karen Rascon as she thumbs through Contempo's racks —Bonnie Gan-gelhoff, Houston Post, 2 Sept. 1984
"You can't just come in off the street and make them," Mr. [Bob] Raspanti said emphatically. "You have to understand the dough in order to relate to it." —New Yorker, 4 Oct. 1982
I really don't relate to football like I do baseball — Joe Falls, Sporting News, 25 Oct. 1982
In this last example relate means roughly "respond favorably," a sense that has grown out of the popularized psychological one. The commentators—and you— may find these uses a bit tiresome, but they clearly are established in speech and in general writing.
