词组 | as follows |
释义 | as follows If you are really interested, as follows regularly has the singular form of the verb—follows—even if preceded by a plural. • The principal parts of lay are as follows: —Macmillan 1982 All the experts agree—Copperud 1970, 1980, Harper 1975, 1985, Longman 1984, Freeman 1983, Phythian 1979, Bremner 1980, Johnson 1982, Heritage 1969, Bernstein 1977, and undoubtedly many others. • One of the more interesting aspects of this subject is its longevity—it was first discussed in Baker 1770. Baker argued that as follows was preferable to as follow, which he says some 18th-century writers, including Addison, used. (The OED does show at least one 18th- century as follow, but not from Addison.) Campbell 1776 concurred with Baker and pronounced what seems to have been the final word: "When a verb is used impersonally, it ought undoubtedly to be in the singular number, whether the neuter pronoun be expressed or understood " No one seems to have disagreed subsequently; Lindley Murray 1795 took Campbell over into a footnote, and no modern commentator even gives Campbell's reasoning a thought. The only modern wrinkle on the subject comes from a couple of Harper usage panelists, who think as follows can often be omitted. In a construction such as the one from Macmillan 1982 above, it could indeed be omitted. It seldom is omitted, however, perhaps in part because style manuals usually recommend that a colon be used only after a complete clause. As follows (or the following) serve to complete the clause in contexts like the one from Macmillan. |
