词组 | as how |
释义 | as how As how is aspersed by Phythian 1979 as incorrect and by Copperud 1970 as substandard for that. It is neither, however. It is simply dialectal: the OED characterizes it as southern (English) dialect; the Dictionary of American Regional English calls it chiefly Southern and Midland. It has had some literary use by Tobias Smollett (Roderick Random, 1748; Humphry Clinker, 1771), Captain Marryat (Peter Simple 1834), Bret Harte (The Luck of Roaring Camp, 1870), and Edward Eggleston (The Hoosier Schoolmaster, 1871). We have little evidence of current literary use. It is found in the combinations being as how and seeing as how, and is also fairly common after allow: • She didn't know I had sent it to her ... but she allowed as how she liked the book —Flannery O'Connor, letter, 24 Jan. 1962 This expression has current use in journalism and especially political journalism perhaps, as Reader's Digest 1983 suggests, for its "mildly satirical effect." Or perhaps it aims simply to provide an air of studied informality: • Nixon allowed as how the best way to knock Romney down in the polls was to remove his winner status be beating him in New Hampshire —William Safire, Before The Fall (cited in Reader's Digest 1983) Premier Chou expressed cordiality toward the United States but allowed as how neither he nor ... Chairman Mao ... are planning American visits — John Hughes, Christian Science Monitor, 10 Oct. 1972 It is also used to ascribe a countrified air to someone indirectly quoted: • The man came, measured the height and girth of the tree, and allowed as how this was one of the most firmly rooted junipers he'd ever seen —Gordon Kahn, Atlantic, December 1947 • Even the nurseryman was uncertain of its exact origin, although he did allow as how it was a local product —Michael Olmert, Horticulture, February 1983 |
