| 释义 | die, dice The use of dice as a singular for one of the small cubes thrown in various games has been the object of some discussion. Krapp 1927 and Evans 1957 both mention its use, with Evans saying that dice is the usual singular. A letter to Word Study in 1947 made the claim that dice was the usual singular used by those who gambled with dice, and the Merriam editor who replied to the letter agreed, even though the use was not recognized in Webster's Second. Copperud 1970, 1980, finding the singular dice entered only in Webster's New World Dictionary (he missed the coverage in Webster's Third and the Collegiate dictionaries edited from it), disapproves the use. The OED shows that the singular dice has been in use since the 14th century. It is apparently primarily a spoken use, for it is fairly rare in print. If dice players scorn die as a singular in speech, they (or their editors) seem to prefer it in print. |
