词组 | clear, clearly |
释义 | clear, clearly Both clear and clearly are adverbs, but in recent use they do not overlap. Clear is most often used in the sense "all the way": • ... my ticket from San Francisco clear to New York City —Jack Kerouac, Esquire, March 1970 • ... a model son who had just gone clear out of his mind —Renata Adler, New Yorker, 24 Apr. 1971 • ... there is a good chance that the bay will freeze clear across —E. B. White, letter, 18 Jan. 1940 • ... with his shirt soaked clear through —Robert Greenfield, Rolling Stone, 20 July 1972 Clearly is used in the sense "in a clear manner": • ... writes clearly and helpfully —Times Literary Supp., 16 Apr. 1970 • His skull shone clearly in the gaslight —Flann O'Brien, At Swim-Two-Birds, 1939 • ... looked clearly at their country and set it down freshly —Smithsonian, November 1982 It is also used to mean "without doubt or question": • He clearly knows his way about the complex and abstruse issues —Times Literary Supp., 2 Oct. 1970 • ... except when national security is clearly involved —John Fischer, Harper's, October 1970 • ... walked toward them calmly and sanely, clearly not armed with bottles or stones —James Jones, Harper's, February 1971 In this second sense clearly appears also as a sentence adverb, a use that is criticized by Howard 1980 and Safire 1980 as a vogue use. Both commentators seem a bit tardy in discovering this use, which has been around quite a few years and is established: • Clearly, we must look further and find a rational test —Zechariah Chafee, Jr., Free Speech in the United States, 1941 • Clearly it is a good thing to have material conveniences —Sir Richard Livingstone, Atlantic, March 1953 • Clearly we are in a transitional stage —Vera Mich-eles Dean, The Four Cornerstones of Peace, 1946 • Clearly some literalist recourses to law are offensive to the sense of justice —Alexander Comfort, Center Mag., May 1970 • Clearly our aqueous environment is being subjected to an accelerating stress —Barry Commoner, Columbia Forum, Spring 1968 |
