词组 clear, clearly
释义 clear, clearly
Both clear and clearly are adverbs, but in recent use they do not overlap. Clear is most often used in the sense "all the way":

... with his shirt soaked clear through —Robert Greenfield, Rolling Stone, 20 July 1972
Clearly is used in the sense "in a clear manner":
... writes clearly and helpfully —Times Literary Supp., 16 Apr. 1970
His skull shone clearly in the gaslight —Flann O'Brien, At Swim-Two-Birds, 1939

It is also used to mean "without doubt or question":

... except when national security is clearly involved —John Fischer, Harper's, October 1970
... walked toward them calmly and sanely, clearly not armed with bottles or stones —James Jones, Harper's, February 1971
In this second sense clearly appears also as a sentence adverb, a use that is criticized by Howard 1980 and Safire 1980 as a vogue use. Both commentators seem a bit tardy in discovering this use, which has been around quite a few years and is established:
Clearly, we must look further and find a rational test —Zechariah Chafee, Jr., Free Speech in the United States, 1941
Clearly it is a good thing to have material conveniences —Sir Richard Livingstone, Atlantic, March 1953
