词组 | disappointed |
释义 | disappointed When disappointed is used with a preposition in contemporary writing, it may take any one of several prepositions: about, at, by, in, over, or with. It may also be followed by to used with an infinitive. At one time, disappointed of was common, but during the 20th century, disappointed in has become the most prevalent usage: • ... to be contradicted by events, to be disappointed in his hopes —Sir Winston Churchill, quoted in William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1960 • By 1843, when he came home disappointed in journalism but eager to write books —Henry Seidel Canby, Thoreau, 1939 During the 19th and early 20th centuries, some writers, T. B. Macaulay and W. H. Hudson to name two, used disappointed with the word agreeably. The juxtaposition was deliberate, and, while some usage commentators cautioned against the use, others conceded that under the right circumstances it served a legitimate purpose: to convey a certain whimsical paradox. The use is not attested in contemporary writing: • On approaching the house I was agreeably disappointed at having no pack of loud-mouthed, ferocious dogs rushing forth —W. H. Hudson, The Purple Land, 1885 |
