词组 drought, drouth
释义 drought, drouth
These variant spellings for the dry spell receive more diverse comment than you would suspect: Shaw 1987, Harper 1985, and Watt 1967 say that both are correct but that drought is more common than drouth. Our evidence confirms this. Copperud 1980 finds drouth in greater favor, a comment that is not supported by our evidence. Longman 1984 says that drouth is poetic except in Irish, Scottish, and North American English; our evidence cannot dispute this.
Evans 1957 calls drouth dialectal in England, but standard and interchangeable with drought in the U.S.; our evidence shows that drouth was more common in 1957 than it is now. The Oxford American Dictionary says that careful writers and speakers do not use drouth. This remark is simply not true:
But weather seemed loath to bedevil the hardy island further, except with drouth —Christopher Morley, in A Century of the Essay, ed. David Daiches, 1951
'Tis not enough on roots and in the mouth, But give me water heavy on the head In all the passion of a broken drouth—Robert Frost, A Witness Tree, 1942
... the desolation, the aesthetic and spiritual drouth, of Anglo-Saxon middle-class society —Edmund Wilson, Axel's Castle, 1931
I know it was a year of drouth —The Autobiography of William Allen White, 1946
A drouth or a plague of insects may cause crop failure along the river —Charles F. Hockett, Man's Place in Nature, 1973
At the present time, drouth is less frequent than drought in American English, but both forms are standard.
