词组 estimation
释义 estimation
Fowler 1926 expresses a curious dislike for the use of this word to mean "opinion, judgment," and he especially considers its use in such phrases as in my estimation to be nothing less than "illiterate." Presumably he was unaware that this sense of estimation dates back to the 14th century, when Chaucer used it in his translation of Boethius's De Consolatione Philoso-phiae (as the OED shows), and that it has been recognized as standard in dictionaries going all the way back to Samuel Johnson's (1755), in which it is illustrated with a quotation from Francis Bacon. It is, beyond doubt, an entirely reputable sense, and Fowler's disapproval of it (which has been echoed by some later commentators) can only be regarded as a personal idiosyncrasy.
