词组 | token |
释义 | token The idiomatic phrase by the same token has been the object of sporadic criticism, sometimes because it is thought to lack a clear meaning and to be imprecisely used, and sometimes because it is thought to be archaic. Archaic it certainly is not. The evidence in our files shows clearly that by the same token occurs commonly and idiomatically in current English. Its meaning can, however, be somewhat hard to pin down. In general it serves as a kind of loose connective between statements that have some logical association that is expected to be clear to the reader. Its meaning is usually close to "for the same reason," "at the same time," or "in the same way": • ... the artist has mysteriously been hybridized with the criminal or the antisocial figure. By the same token ... crime has become obsessional in our society as a form of artistic expression —Marshall McLuhan, American Scholar, Spring 1966 • We are so self-conscious ... that we not only generate critical prophesies, but by the same token defy them or undo them by discussing and examining them to death —Robert Coles, Trans-Action, May 1968 • New York was the pleasure capital But by the same token it was unreal, a mirage, and distinctly treacherous —Alfred Kazin, Harper's, December 1968 No serious objection can be made to these uses of the phrase. What you may want to avoid, however, is relying too heavily on by the same token to connect statements whose logical association may not be immediately clear: • Physicians dominate medical licensing and examining boards. By the same token, a leading intellectual is a person whom other leading intellectuals consider a leading intellectual —Change, March 1972 |
