词组 tome
释义 tome
In its original sense, tome is a synonym for volume; that is, "a book forming part of a larger work." The use in which tome has become established as a familiar word, however, is as a synonym for book, with strong connotations of great size or highly detailed—often ponderous—scholarship:
I waded conscientiously through many formidable tomes —W. Somerset Maugham, The Summing Up, 1938
The authors' opinions make it livelier than the ordinary academic tome —Rod Nordell, Christian Science Monitor, 5 Sept. 1957
In these days of overpadded tomes —Maria Lenhart, Christian Science Monitor, 10 Sept. 1979
... the fatty tomes that clog the literary mainstream —John Updike, New Yorker, 11 Jan. 1982
Used without regard for these connotations, tome sometimes draws the charge that it is pretentious or a bit of journalistic cant. The "ponderous" connotations of tome seem to have developed in the 19th century, but the word has been used as a synonym for book since at least 1573. Although it now usually serves to express criticism, it is also still used on occasion as a term of praise:
... I am one of the fortunate few in this country who has the time to wear each copy of this sturdy tome to tatters before the next update becomes available —Bill James, Inside Sports, August 1982
... lucky children receive tomes, not toys, as gifts — Anna Marie & Cullen Murphy, Smithsonian, November 1984
