词组 excuse
释义 excuse
When the verb excuse is used with a preposition, it ordinarily is used with from, less often with for. Moreover, when the word is used in this way, it usually, although not always, appears in the passive:
... the compulsory education law permitted children to be excused from public schools —American Guide Series: Minnesota, 1938
... enabled an even greater number of officers to excuse themselves from any personal responsibility —William L. Shirer, The Rise and Fall of the Third Reich, 1960
... one may be excused for supposing that he, too, would have been in the Canadian League long ago —Jack Olsen, Sports Illustrated, 29 July 1968
The Merriam-Webster files also attest the use of excuse with of instead of from, but this use is infrequent:
Has any other General been excused of the necessity of giving an accounting —New Republic, 29 Aug. 1949
These observations pertain chiefly to American usage because it seems that, although at one time British English also used excuse with from or for, the word now appears more often with no preposition:
... these students are excused the normal degree course entry qualifications of two A levels —Peter Wilby, The Observer, 19 May 1974
