词组 prejudice, prejudiced
释义 prejudice, prejudiced
 1. Prejudice to. Murray 1795 corrected a prejudice to to prejudice against. Oddly enough, Longman 1984 also carries a warning against the use of to. We have no instances of to except in the occasionally encountered legal (or legalistic) phrase "without prejudice to." If the usage does exist, it may be primarily a spoken British use.
 2. Prejudice(d) against, in favor of, toward(s). Given the generally negative meaning attached to prejudice, noun and verb, it is not surprising that the most frequently used preposition is against:
... some absurd prejudice against living on one's friends —Stella Gibbons, Cold Comfort Farm, 1932
... inner agreement with the prevailing prejudice against him —Eric Hoffer, N.Y. Times Mag., 29 Nov. 1964
... the former middle-class prejudice against wearing second-hand clothing —Roy Lewis & Angus Maude, The English Middle Classes, 1950
In favor of is much less common. Some older commentators (Bache 1869, Ayres 1881, Vizetelly 1906) disapproved prejudice or prejudiced used this way, but no one disapproves any more.
... a definite prejudice in favor of low latitude living —William G. Byron, Annals of the Association of American Geographers, June 1952
Bander 1978 points out that prejudice toward(s) can be ambiguous, and indeed it can. Our few printed citations require quite a bit of context to make them clear, and we recommend that you avoid toward(s).
The verb (especially in the form of its past participle prejudiced) behaves just like the noun:
... is prejudiced against a lot of different kinds of people —Bob Beamon, quoted in Sports Illustrated, 15 July 1968
... no matter how prejudiced in favor of the men — Norman Mailer, Harper's, March 1971
